John Cleland (1709–1789) was an English novelist best known for his infamous work Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, commonly referred to as Fanny Hill. Born into a wealthy family, Cleland received a solid education, leading to a brief stint with the British East India Company. However, after returning to England, he faced financial difficulties, and in 1748, while imprisoned for debt, he wrote Fanny Hill, which became one of the most notable examples of erotic literature.
