Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851) was an English novelist, essayist, and biographer, renowned for her groundbreaking novel Frankenstein, published in 1818. Born into a family of intellectuals, she was the daughter of pioneering feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and political philosopher William Godwin. Her mother died shortly after her birth, leaving Mary to be raised by her father, who ensured she received a progressive education. At 16, Mary eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, a close friend of her father. Their passionate and unconventional relationship led to travels across Europe and societal ostracism due to their defiance of social norms.
