Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare's most renowned tragedies, likely written between 1606 and 1607. The play tells the story of Macbeth, a Scottish chieftain whose ambition leads him to betrayal, murder, and ultimate downfall.
Under the influence of the prophecy of three witches and the manipulations of his wife, Lady Macbeth, the titular character resolves to murder King Duncan. This act sets him on a path to power, accompanied by a gradual descent into madness and moral decay.
Macbeth is not merely a tale of ambition; it is also a profound exploration of human nature, accountability for one’s actions, and the destructive power of guilt. The work stands out for its dark atmosphere, intense emotions, and masterful language, making it one of the most significant pieces in world literature.
Our edition is inspired by the famous collection of the poet’s complete works published under the supervision of John Bell in London in the 1780s. Like the English original, our version is typeset in Monotype Bell, a typeface cut by Richard Austin for John Bell around 1787. The frontispiece features the engraving The Birth of Shakespeare by Angelica Kauffmann, and the binding incorporates ornaments used by bookbinders who worked for Bell.
